So apparently someone thinks Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and NBA 2K3 are the best games for the PlayStation 3, we think there’s room to do better. See we feel if you own a video game system you want to show it off, you want to show people something they can’t get anywhere else. 01. 3D Dot Game Heroes
3D Dot Game Heroes by Atlus (Available At Amazon) takes a queue from old school action adventure RPGs like The Legend of Zelda and Dragon Quest and brings them into 3D. Using cubes built on top of each other the pixels come to life in 3D before your eyes giving you that retro flair you love and still looking smooth in HD. You’ll be able to create your own 3D Dot character then set out to save the Dotnia Kingdom from the scourge of evil, do you have what it takes?
02. Flower
If you’re looking for a relaxing and peaceful journey Flower by thatgamecompany is it. You’ll need to control the wind to set flower petals in motion on their journey to restore color to the land. While the premise might sound boring for adreneline junkies the combination of beautiful graphics and relaxing music can really suck you into the game if you kick back with it and just enjoy the journey. Using the PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS motion controls perfectly you’ll be guiding your flower petals to their destination in no time. If you happen to purchase the Journey Collectors Edition On Amazon you’ll also get Journey and flOw as well for one great price.
03. God of War Series
THE best third person beat ’em up on PlayStation 3 has to be the God of War Series by SCE Studios Santa Monica. Kratos is one pissed off spartan who stops at nothing and leaves a trail of dead bodies that would stretch to the moon along with spilling enough blood to fill the oceans six times over. This is definitely not one for the children as if the giant M for Mature rating on the box wasn’t enough. You’ll hack, slice, disembowel, stab, rip, eye gouge and even has a Ménage à trois mini-game during your downtime from killing. You’re best bet is to pick up the God of War Saga Collection from Amazon which has five full games, three on disc and two downloadable. If this series doesn’t feed your bloodlust nothing will.
04. Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo 5 by Polyphony Digital is the pure racing experience on PlayStation 3. If you love your driving game letting you tune gear ratios, ride height and shaving 0.1 seconds off your previous lap then this is the game you’ll be pumping thousands of hours into and is a real gearhead’s dream. So take note if you just want to drive this is a tweakers paradise not a get in and go game. But if you want daily drivers, weird imports, sleepers, exotics, NASCAR, supercars, F1, rally cars and even the yet to be released 2014 Corvette they are all here. As usual with car games there’s been some paid DLC so just pick up Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition from Amazon since it comes with a voucher for $20 worth of DLC from the get go.
05. Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain by Quantic Dream had some knock out visuals when it debuted and set itself apart by trying to tell a dramatic real non-linear human story. I know those sound like buzz words and they are but that’s why Quantic Dream hoped to achieve and while it’s not the most technically advanced game now or the most replayable, there is only a few real paths it’s still a game that deserves to played at least once by PlayStation 3 owners. Some may call it quick time heavy but think of it as an interactive movie and pickup Heavy Rain The Directors Cut which includes Move Support and the DLC at Amazon.
06. inFamous
Protagonist Cole MacGrath can channel either his light or dark side while wielding electricity in inFamous by Sucker Punch Productions. This open world game tasks your morality as you struggle with your new found electric powers in the huge Empire City. Like any person who just woke up with superpowers the journey will always try to pull you one way or the other and the citizens of the city will react accordingly to how good or evil you’ve become. You can grab the inFamous Collection on Amazon which includes inFamous 1 and inFamous 2 along with the Festival of Blood and more DLC for one low price.
07. Journey
There’s a lot of sand standing between you and the finally in Journey by thatgamecompany but help can come from unexpected places. You shall see a mountain far in the distance that becons your robbed figure however like the name the Journey is more than the reward. There is a co-operative component that can be amazing considering there is but a single shout command that’s used to communicate back and forth. On top of that there’s no friends list or invite you’ll travel the world while helping and being helped by anonymous strangers. The unique experience can be purchased on Amazon as The Journey Collectors Edition which will also nab you Flower and flOw for one great price.
08. Killzone Series
Killzone by Guerrilla Games is Sony’s attempt to push the graphical boundaries of First Person Shooters on consoles and of course compete with Bungie and Microsoft’s Halo. From it’s inception it has been meant to wow players and bystanders alike and for the most part it does succeed. Killzone 3’s multiplayer component is so solid Guerrilla has released it as a separate product on PlayStation Network bringing the cost of entry even lower. While the multiplayer is where players put the most hours in, the single player story arch is not slouch and by picking up the Killzone Trilogy Collection from Amazon you’ll get all three complete games plus DLC however sadly no multiplayer for the original Killzone.
09. Little Big Planet 2
Little Big Planet by Media Molecule started the Play, Create, Share revolution on PlayStation 3 and the sequel pushed it’s boundaries to infinity. The first thing that draws everyone into the Little Big Planet series is Sackboy, his body made of thread, his button eyes and a tongue like a dog will melt even the blackest of hearts. But where the visuals are cute, cardboard and inviting the hook is the world that expands after the main story ends. Thanks to the games create abilities the player community have created worlds in this game that are as limitless as your imagination and to get started all you need is Little Big Planet 2: Special Edition on Amazon which includes some of the games cute DLC.
10. Metal Gear Solid 4
Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series took a graphical leap that only a giant fifty gigabyte blu-ray could deliver when Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots hit PlayStation 3. People who haven’t played it will whine on and on about the cut scenes and load times but damn if this game doesn’t keep getting better and better the more you push through. Yeah the story is cliched and the situations contrived but throw it all together with that Metal Gear Solid tint like on Kojima knows how and you’ve got a winner. There’s no DLC and the online component has gone dark but you can still pick up Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from Amazon here.
11. PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2
The PixelJunk Shooter series by Q-Games is some retro action with wonderful physics thrown in. Sound pretty random doesn’t it, well it would be if it wasn’t for how easily these two genres meld together. So you fly your spaceship underground and grab scientists, catch them all and unlock more levels. Simple enough, now the water, fire, smoke and oil all react differently and can cancel each other out as well as help or hinder you for some quick puzzle fun during the action. Like previous Q-Games titles the music really compliments the title and keeps the action flowing nicely. You can only pick up PixelJunk Shooter 1 and Part 2 through the PlayStation Network so head over and grab ’em today.
12. Ratchet and Clank Series
Can you believe that the Ratchet and Clank series by Insomniac Games has eleven games and counting? The insane amount of humor and weapons that the series is known for is to numerous to list. Ratchet the Lombax and his trusty robot Clank go on crazy and wacky adventures that see even more insane and wacky weapons turn up that you can use to defeat your enemies with. The All 4 One entry in the series even lets you and three friends take on an adventure together. If you want co-operative platforming fun be sure to pick up Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One on Amazon and for more single player action try starting off with the Ratchet & Clank Collection on Amazon as well.
13. Uncharted Series
Nathan Drake is an adventurer, a fighter, a lover, a wise cracker and one of the luckiest people alive and the Uncharted series by Naughty Dog will let you live each and everyone of his adventures. The life of a treasure hunter isn’t always easy sure there’s lots of treasurer, pretty woman, friends you can count on but there’s also , evil villains, traps that would make Indian Jones smile, back stabbing friends and tons of nameless enemies to pick off. It has the perfect mix of shooting, platforming, puzzle solving and of course story to keep you playing straight through until the credits roll. The Game of the Year Edition for Uncharted 3 finally has dropped so now is the time to pick it up from Amazon if you’ve waited.
14. Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles by SEGA is a sleeper hit that brings tactical role-playing to the PlayStation 3. The game takes full use of cover and height advantages and disadvantages during battle where you’ll use your BLiTZ troops to fight off the East Europan Imperial Alliance enemies. The graphics resemble something out of sketch book and the tense action will keep you engaged for hours. Sadly it seems many passed this game up at launch but Valkyria Chronicles from Amazon is a welcome addition to any PlayStation 3 collection.
