Ridge Racer: Driftopia for PC and PS3 is Namco Bandai’s racing entry in the free to play space that has some fans pissed off and other fans just happy the Ridge Racer franchise is still around. Developer Bugbear previously brought everyone Ridge Racer: Unbounded which I thought was a good idea conceptually just not what I wanted out of a Ridge Racer game.
That’s what Bugbear and Namco Bandai need to overcome with Ridge Racer: Driftopia, what is it about Ridge Racer that makes it special to fans? Or hell, maybe they don’t, maybe with so many racing games on the market and so many new video gamer’s willing to pay a few dollars to max out their boost who have never played a Ridge Racer game before it won’t matter what it’s called as long as it’s fun.
From the trailer below we know the graphics sure look nice, looking up to par with Unbounded which did look like a modern racer graphically. There also seems to be an insane amount of over lighting that burns through every screen, hopefully there’s a little less of this during racing. The real test however will be how long people stick around to Be First, First To Drive and First To Drift with Destruction too! If a community builds behind the game, the controls end up being somewhat tight and if there’s always races to be had even at weird times it won’t matter what name is on the outside as long as it’s fun.
