Horror video games seem like a dime a dozen, hell just today we posted about Lone Survivor: The Directors Cut but how many are made by a creator who has experienced real terror in their life? Neverending Nightmares by Matt Gilgenbach is one such game where the creator is bringing you into their world, a world you might not want to inhabit.
Neverending Nightmares is inspired by Mr. Gilgenbach’s real battle with obsessive compulsive disorder and depression. The gameplay is focused mostly on exploration, while there is some light combat your character is more like you are in real life, vulnerable and without many defenses. Matt name drops Amnesia: The Dark Descent when discussing some stealth sections that show up and this seems perfectly fitting for a game set in the real world. Most of the time the scariest thing to us is not what is out there but what could be.
The art of Neverending Nightmares also appears frightful, it has this 2D charcoal and pencil drawing like quality to it with varying shades of gray that looks to be the creation of a mad man. Of course when there is blood it is bright, crimson and splashed across the screen making it even more dynamic. If you dare, head down past the jump and check out the pitch video for this experience in terrifying horror.
