Velvet Sundown is like a choose your own adventure game where you’re on a a yacht but all the other characters can also choose their own adventure and no one is sure who is going to do what. You can never be sure if the people you will play with will takes this game very very serious or just try to troll the hell out of everyone else. Given the only way to interact with other player is via the games text-to-speech engine prepare for some trolling. It almost sounds like it was made for people who love bad movies and Mystery Science Theater 3000 as long as you can laugh at yourself and others you might end up having a great time if not you might want to wait until it’s out of beta and then cirlce back around.
There’s not combat per say but someone is carrying a taser and you already know if you will be the irresponsible one who goes around tasing the whole crew until everyone is flopping around looking like human tuna season on the deck. There’s 11 characters you can choose from each with their own motives and you only need 4 players to start a game. My suggestions is if you want to take this free to play game seriously you should round up three friends who love to roleplay and will also not best out the taser at the most inopportune times.
Also while the game touts endless replayability a quick glance at the forums reveals players have already started to piece together the possible outcomes, almost like they’ve skipped ahead a few pages. Being free to play I would bet that new scenarios will cost money but before you get to groaning developer Tribe Studios could do a great thing by allowing everyone to play with only the host needing to buy the expansion or something similar.

PRESS RELEASE
Velvet Sundown starts open beta on Steam
The multiplayer socialgame aboard a luxury yacht sets sail
Helsinki, Finland – July 22, 2014 – The innovative Dramagame Velvet Sundown from the Finnish developer team Tribe Studios Ltd. has begun its official open beta. The unique mix of role-playing game and social experiment is something new in the international gaming landscape, creating the brand-new genre of Dramagame. The open beta will go live on Steam and directly at www.velvetsundown.com. View the new official trailer here.
In order to offer an even more intense game experience, the developers have listened to player feedback and implemented two scenarios which differ in play and outcome. In “Sea of Fire”, the focus is on completing quests and winning the game. In “Story of Fathers and Sons”, the core elements are the social aspects and the development of your own story together with the other players.
At the beginning of the game, every player assumes the role of one of the up to eleven characters on the ship. This could be a passenger or one of the crew members. All characters have their own personality and individual backstory.
Randomly assigned quests must be completed in the course of the game. The players determine how a game proceeds, because they can give their fantasy free reign to complete their tasks. Thanks to the integrated text-to-speech technology, players are able to make their characters speak the written texts in real-time and thus bring them to life. While a multiplayer session may only take about 45 minutes, thanks to Dramagame technology there are millions of possible story versions, offering an inconceivable replay value.
Starting today, the open beta is available on Steam at http://store.steampowered.com/app/307290/ and at www.velvetsundown.com.
