On October 5, Project Spark will be rolling out its biggest update and platform change. This update overhauls many Project Spark systems and areas. The biggest change is a shift from a free-to-play model to a free and open creation platform.
That is pretty damn significant and here I was just thinking last week, “I wonder what the hell happened to Project Spark?” Now we know, it seems that Microsoft wants to foster creativity and the best way to do that is with free tools. So all of Project Spark is going free including the DLC that was previously released and no more DLC going forward.
Users who purchased Project Spark content after July 28th 2015 will want to consult the FAQ to go through the process to get their money back in the form of Microsoft Store credits. Not really the best kind of refund but it’s better than a lot of other things you hear about after projects shift to a new model. If you happened to purchase anything prior to July 28th 2015 Microsoft says you helped fund a great thing and if you are still playing since then I think that would hold true.
Project Spark is also growing with this update, maximum terrain limits have been doubled, prop limits have been increased by 500, over 200 more assets will be added and achievements have been revamped. On the downside the Project Spark Tour and Treasure Trove were removed and upload slots are capped at 100 even if you previously bought more, a bonus to some but not others. It will be interesting to see how the community responds and if this leads to even more creative output from the fans.
